If your neck always feels tight, stiff, achy, or irritated, the problem may not actually start in your neck. It may start in your chest. More specifically, it may start with your pecs.
Most people hear "neck pain" and immediately think they need to stretch their neck, massage their traps, crack something, or blame their pillow. Sometimes that helps for a few minutes. But then the same tightness comes right back. Because the neck is often the victim, not the criminal.
Your pecs, especially the pectoralis minor, can pull your shoulders forward, change the position of your shoulder blades, encourage forward head posture, and create more tension through the neck, traps, upper back, and even the jaw.
How Tight Pecs Change Your Posture
Tight pecs pull the shoulders forward into rounded shoulders, forward shoulder posture, or upper crossed posture. The average adult head weighs around 10 to 12 pounds, but the farther it moves forward, the more demand it places on the muscles and joints of the neck.
Common Signs Your Pec May Be Contributing to Neck Pain
- Rounded shoulders or forward head posture
- Tightness across the chest
- Neck pain after sitting, driving, or desk work
- Upper trap tightness or shoulder blade discomfort
- Headaches that come with neck tension
- Neck tightness that returns after neck stretching
How to Fix It
- Release the pec with lacrosse ball work
- Mobilize the chest, shoulders, and upper back
- Stretch the pec correctly with a doorway stretch
- Strengthen the upper back with band pull-aparts and face pulls
- Train the deep neck stabilizers with chin tucks
Final Coaching Takeaway
Your neck may hurt. But your neck may not be the root problem. Release the pec. Mobilize the shoulder and upper back. Strengthen the upper back. Then fix the daily habits that keep dragging you forward.
